There are 4 units in Grade 10 Science:
1.Chemistry and Chemical Reactions
Learning Goals:
a) analyse, on the basis of research, various safety and environmental issues associated with chemical reactions and their reactants and/or product(s)
b) analyse how an understanding of the properties of chemical substances and their reactions can be applied to solve environmental challenges
c) use appropriate terminology related to chemical reactions; and identify types of evidence of a chemical reaction
d) construct molecular models to illustrate the structure of molecules in simple chemical reactions and produce diagrams of these models
e) investigate simple chemical reactions, including synthesis, decomposition, and displacement reactions (single and double), and represent them using a variety of formats
f) use an inquiry process to investigate the law of conservation of mass in a chemical reaction
g) plan and conduct an inquiry to identify the evidence of chemical change
h) plan and conduct an inquiry to classify some common substances as acidic, basic, or neutral
i) describe the relationships between chemical formulae, composition, and names of binary compounds
j) explain, using the law of conservation of mass and atomic theory, the rationale for balancing chemical equations
k) write word equations and balanced chemical equations for simple chemical reactions
l) describe, on the basis of observation, the reactants in and products of a variety of chemical
m) reactions, including synthesis, decomposition, and displacement reactions
n) describe the process of acid–base neutralization
o) describe how the pH scale is used to classify solutions as acidic, basic, or neutral
p) identify simple ionic compounds, simple compounds involving polyatomic ions, molecular compounds, and acids, using the periodic table and list of polyatomic ions and write the formulae
2. Organs, Systems and Tissues
LEARNING GOALS and SUCCESS CRITERIA
Assess the importance of medical imaging technologies on society
State the cell theory
Describe the importance of cell division
Explain why cells divide
Describe the cell cycle in plants and animals and the importance of mitosis
Know the phases of mitosis in proper order and what occurs in each phases
Label plant and animal cell parts
Draw the cells structures and identify their functions
Define prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell types
Investigate the rate of cell division in cancerous/non cancerous cells and identify the impact of the cell division rate on the organism
Benign vs. metastatic tumours

Explain the connection between specialized cells, tissues, organs and systems
-know the hierarchy of cells-tissues-organs-organ systems
Describe the function of specialized cells
How their structure and function are related (nerve cells have branching)
Explain the main function of a the digestive system
-the process of digestion from start to finish when chewing a piece of food
-state the organs, their locations, and functions
-purpose of digestion
-difference between chemical and physical digestion (examples)
